Following the response on the above Instagram post, I wanted to share a practical approach with you to cultivate your authentic style at work and business. Often we get so carried away in comparison analysis when following closely what colleagues are doing. The osteopath who got featured in the news, the reflexologist with 200k instagram followers, the acupuncturist who landed a big brand partnership. But there’s no need to worry about what others are doing. The best investment of your time and energy is in your own practice so that you build a career that reflects your personal style and authenticity. Customers and clients today are starving for authenticity, for something real. And nobody can replicate your energy.
Related to this topic, in a previous newsletter edition I already wrote about how to differentiate your offering in the crowded space of health and wellness options. Instead of spending money on more courses to add to your toolkit, how can you refine how you present yourself and invest in your ‘who’, to attract career growth and opportunities? You can read that one via the link below here:
How To Differentiate Your Offering

But today’s topic of authenticity is more about how you show up at work, and how you shape your practice according to your personal values and style. Being authentic means that your actions are in alignment with your core beliefs and values. And while some might explain this in the work context as being fully transparent and sharing your thoughts and feelings openly with colleagues and clients, it’s of course important to set boundaries as a healthcare professional and remain professional for the sake of your own wellbeing and that of your clients.
Why is authenticity so important as you shape your practice? It’s because it adds to your credibility and helps clients feel they can trust that your services are genuine. Which in turn allows you to build authentic relationships with your clients, and then can lead to increased bookings and customer loyalty. Plus, the more authentic your offering is, the more you stand out from the crowd and the easier it is for your ideal clients to recognise your work and connect to it.
"Authenticity is the daily practice of letting go of who we think we're supposed to be and embracing who we are." - Brené Brown
While these benefits for your client relationships are of course great, being authentic at work is even more of a game changer for yourself - whether you manage your own private practice, lead a team at a clinic, or are self-employed and working at different venues. Authenticity fuels your sense of fulfilment and your resilience (we all know it takes practice and patience to build a career). It might be scary at times, because it requires vulnerability and integrity, but the more you embrace your authenticity the more free you’ll feel to come up with creative solutions and take health risks in business. At the end of the day, running a business as your true self makes all of it a lot easier to manage!
So I hope this post acts as a boost of confidence to go out there and expand your authenticity in business. My question for you today is, how authentic do you feel in your business right now? If you sense there’s some room for improvement, the below questions will be a helpful exercise to spot areas to focus on. You do you!
What are my core values, and how do they currently shape my work life?
If I tap into the infinite possibilities and release any fear of failure, what would my vision for my practice or career be? How can I get closer to this vision now?
What are my communication styles in my marketing and my practice, and how can I adapt them to bring more of my authentic voice out?
Do I hold back in any way from sharing my thoughts, visions or beliefs in work because of the fear of another’s reactions?
What would it look like if I peeled away this protective layer that’s conforming to industry standards and expectations?
