Industry Insights
I’ve been having interesting conversations about the recent cover story on Dr Huberman and this Guardian article Uncovering the Higher Truth of Jay Shetty. Two of the most popular health & wellness podcast hosts in the world who hold significant power considering the millions of people they reach. These articles now put into question how honest Jay Shetty has been about his background and reveal Dr Huberman’s mistreatment of the women in his life and what could be described as emotionally abusive behaviour. As men in powerful positions, I doubt it would have any repercussions for their reputation but it’s worth considering how this information might impact your own listening. For me it isn't even really about these two individuals, but it begs a bigger question on how we can promote healthcare sources that aren't rooted in a patriarchal system.
Elise Loehnen wrote about the dominance of popular male podcasters in the wellness space who barely platform or interview women, even when it comes to discussing women’s health topics, and she continues to add to the conversation on Huberman's situation in her latest article - absolutely worth a read!
A Moment for Menopause
In recent weeks, much news on menopause has popped up. From a commercial perspective menopause is a growing market with lots of new products being launched. And this has prompted leading doctors and researchers – from the US, UK and Australia – to jointly call for a societal shift that challenges inaccurate assumptions. Their review of the medical literature on menopause, found that misguided or harmful attitudes towards menopause were often pervasive in high-income countries. ‘Countries need to learn from societies where ageing in women confers respect and in which views of menopause are more affirming’, their paper said, noting Indigenous communities in Australia considered menopause as less of a problem.
I do believe we need to focus on research, not just products. One trailblazer in this space is neuroscientist Dr Lisa Mosconi, who recently sat down with Rich Roll for a fascinating conversation about menopause and brain health, Alzheimer’s and dementia, neuro-nutrition, hormone replacement therapy, and more.
And the menopause conversation even made it into the FT stating that menopause support must tread a fine line between awareness and stigma.
