Chances are that you’ve had more than one client in your practice who mentioned ZOE’s programme in recent months. For those new to ZOE, it’s a personalised nutrition programme from the world's largest nutritional science study. ZOE is leading the way in personalised nutrition, and alongside their UK product launch they also host a top ranked podcast covering the latest on nutritional science, so it's no wonder their programme is so popular!
A number of you in our community shared the need for a more in-depth look into ZOE’s programme as a practitioner, so this week I bring you an exclusive look behind the scenes. I spoke to their team to get a clear understanding of the science behind their product and how exactly they personalise their nutritional advice to consumers. And if that wasn’t enough, they also shared their first practitioner offer with us, a special 25% practitioner discount code for the Circe Health community. So, let’s dive in and find out more!
Hi Nathan! So please tell us, what’s the actual science behind ZOE’s programme?
Our PREDICT study is the largest of its kind, conducted with scientists from Massachusetts General Hospital, Stanford Medicine, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and King’s College London. It was designed to allow us to quantify and predict individual variations in postprandial responses to standardised meals in a real-world setting, while also gathering as much data about lifestyle factors as possible.
From that, we’ve learned that our responses to the food we eat are entirely personal. Our PREDICT studies have shown that there is up to a tenfold variation in responses to the same meal for different people. Read more about the PREDICT Program.
The successful delivery of this study has enabled us to design an at-home testing product for ZOE allowing members to gain a better understanding of their metabolism and gut microbiome.
And how does the ZOE personalised nutrition programme work?
It all starts with simple at-home tests. ZOE analyses your gut health, blood sugar and blood fat, and creates a personalised insights report and programme just for you.
We use a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) that’s easy and painless to apply to your arm for up to 14 days, discover your gut microbes with the most advanced stool test available on the market and using deep shotgun sequencing, we can identify specific ‘good’ and ‘bad’ gut bugs that are linked to ‘good’ and ‘bad’ metabolic health. And using finger-prick tests and cutting-edge analysis, you’ll measure your blood fat responses after eating muffin meals. This test is the only one available on the market that gives you insights into this key component of metabolic health.
6 weeks after testing your biology, you’ll get a detailed report comparing your results to thousands of other people. It will reveal how your body responds to foods including your blood sugar and blood fat responses and scores for meals you ate during the test period. Your personalised gut health report will include a Microbiome Health Score™ and the prevalence of 30 specific bacteria our research has linked to metabolic health.
ZOE then loads your app with your personalised ZOE Scores for thousands of foods and recipes, so you can make the best choices for your body. Built around your food scores, our app will teach you how to make smart swaps. With ZOE, no foods are off limits, and there’s no calorie counting. Your programme teaches you how to add foods to your meals to improve your body's response. Giving you more energy, better gut health and a healthier weight. You change how you eat by building daily habits with ZOE tools, lessons and expert nutrition support. And throughout the programme you can access support and guidance from coaches through the in-app chat.
That’s it for this week’s edition! Do you have follow-up questions for the team at ZOE, or want to get a deep dive into a different product? I’d love to hear from you, you can simply reply to this email.
